About ‘Maldini Doesnt Tackle’
Welcome to the first tactical system for FM2020 developed thanks to the support of my Patreon Supporters. These systems are not just thrown together. They take many, many hours of research, testing and collaboration and I would not be able to do it without your support. If you want to help the development of my Football Manager systems, guides and livestreams, consider becoming a Patreon Supporter today.
In 2017 I released Maldini Doesnt Tackle. A 4-2-4 system based on using both 2 strikers focusing on width, pace and power in counter attacks. This years edition of the MDT applies the same principles, but with the new features added in both FM19 and FM20 it has made the implementation and performance of this system much, much more effective.
I have never had a system this strong, so quickly in the lifespan of a Football Manager game. It usually takes months of testing and community collaborations to reach this point this fast. I am really happy with it. Thank you to everyone who helped test it.
What you will see
- Fast, Relentless Pressing forcing turnovers high up the pitch and opponent errors.
- Players Running with the ball
- Crosses, Crosses, Crosses!
- A sneaky pair of disguised Corners.
- An Overwhelmed Opposition Defense.
- Counter Attacks and Counter Attacks of Counter Attacks.
- Opponents Fullback Unable to overlap freely due to one simple trick. The AML/AMR are designated to mark their sides corresponding full backs, meaning they are never far away and with the high physical stats required for the system, they are likely to be beaten in any physical battle (Beat your man)
- Satisfies Club Culture requests of Play Possession football and Play attacking football.
- ‘Enjoys the teams style of play’ Player feedback.
- Counter Attacks from opposition corners. High Long Shot conversion rate
- High amount of chances in high conversion areas.
Formation & Team Instructions
The system is a basic 4-2-4 formation using inside wingers who works hard to give space for the overlapping attacking wingbacks. As an holding player you’ll find the deep lying playmaker who will make magic between the lines spraying passes and offer an passing option deeper on the pitch.
The 4-2-4 formation will change to a 2-2-6 formation in attacking phase, meaning you’ll overload the opposition in the central areas of the pitch, while the wingbacks stretches play and are ready to hit in crosses and offer an passing outlet wide.
The players will look to get forward with the ball and attract the opponent towards them before the ball are released to a player moving into space. In order to get the ball moving as quickly as possible to the wingers the goalkeeper will be instructed to distribute the ball to the fullbacks.
The players are encourage to work the ball into the box to create ‘better chances’ in high-conversion rate areas(e.g the penalty box).

Player Requirements: Attributes
All players (other than GK) Require without exception high attributes for:
Key Attributes:
Acceleration, Pace, Stamina, Work rate, Teamwork and Natural Fitness. This system has a HUGE dependence on the ability to run over 90mins at a very fast tempo due to the Pressing and Counter attacking nature and as a result you will have some players covering 13km per 90mins over a season so prioritize these attributes over others for selected positions.
A Keeper who is excellent at Rushing Out and One on Ones. Around half of the goals you will concede will be from through balls. Don’t get angry it is a side effect of the All or nothing nature of the system so try to negate the scoring from these passes as much as possible.
Obviously, get the best players you can!.
Code of Conduct:
A Very strict club disciplinary code. The inclusion of this in FM20 is fantastic. It ensures a consistent application of the fines rather then having to rely on your own memory. As a result, players A) Dont get annoyed by inconsistent fines and B) really, REALLY don’t want to be fined 2 weeks wages every 5 or 6 games so they are less likely to get that Red Card. Suspensions for yellow cards are part and parcel for this but, because of the physical nature of the system, those suspensions are actually welcome as it gives you an excuse to rest and rotate your squad. Bonus.
Training:
I recommend custom training schedules to be created focusing on your ability to counter attack, press, overlap, defend from the front, while also making sure your players work on there quickness and endurance. Keepers should cover 1v1’s at least once every 2 weeks to make sure everyone is shape and no area is ignored. Or, you can use mine!
Other Valuable Information
You can change both the AML/R to Inside Forwards if you wish. You can even go for an old school winger should you prefer.
You can change the Strikers roles to anything you prefer providing that you keep it at an ‘Attack’ Duty.
