About the Scholes Can’t Tackle Tactic
What’s started out like a possession based system 8 to 9 years ago when Barcelona dominated the world, has evolved into a system where you aim to basically score more goals than the opposition while playing entertaining football, creating overloads and utilizing the space on the field with beautiful movements and chances created. Influenced by Bob Paisley, it does not focus on a particular playing style (short passes or long), but that every pass has an intention.
Originally the tactical system is based on a style with no style and implement Bob Paisleys visions ideally into every iteration of the Football Manager match engine. In fact, Scholes Cant Tackle has started to become a bit of a problem.
Every year a lot of you expect to win the World Cup with Newcastle by simply by plugging in your tactic and letting it go. In the modern versions of Football Manager you cannot do this.
SI has done a really good job of reducing the power of Tactics as the only way you can win. Training, Recruitment and Dynamics are more important than ever. You cannot ignore these if you want to be successful. That being said I am really happy with how SCT plays this year. So much so that I couldn’t decide which version of the two I have developed is the best… So I released them both!
The Football Manager 2020 Scholes Can’t tackle tactic is a well balanced system for the discerning Football Manager and comes in two versions; a positive and an attacking variant:
SCT Positive:
A well balanced system that provides attractive football and defensive stability while supporting a little creative freedom, Counter attacks and through balls. I tried to focus on the style of not really having a style and as Bob Paisley said ‘it’s about the right ball.’
SCT Attack:
A System designed to smother weaker teams by snuffing out there possession and being bold and brave when we have it. More risky. More goals.
These two systems have exactly the same shape making them really easy to switch back and forth in your game and compliment each other. These are great Plan A and Plan B companions.

Formation & Shape: Positive vs Attack
The Tactical system is a 4-1-4-1 or 4-1-2-2-1 formation with 5 creative players dominating the centre channel, none of them with a definable passing style. The difference between the positive and attacking system is how to use the width and how you’ll approach the opposition. The attacking version looks to stretch the opponent by using wingers and make more movements from deep within the centre of the park, while the positive variant looks to create more overlaps on the wings and make more combination play between the inside forward / inverted winger and the wingbacks.
About the SCT Positive; Team Instructions
The team instruction comes with 3 angles of attack; through the middle of the pitch, by overlaps wide or through the defensive line with passes into space. This makes it difficult for the opposition to anticipate the play, and set up against all of these attacking types most effectively. If one type doesn’t work in the game, probable the other or the third might work.
Along with the passing directness and tempo which is set at standard, the opposition will have a hard time defining our style of play. The use of ‘Be More Expressive’ enhances this unpredictability and increases the players level of creativity.
The default tactic has Work ball into the box which is good at times, but in cases where you experience a number of blocked shots and an opponent who parks the bus with a low block and deep defensive line, I recommend to change to ‘Shoot on Sight’ giving the opponents less time to get back into position if they are being outplayed.
If you should have problems breaking down the opposition, it may be smart to play a bit wider by ticking the attacking width one nudge up, as the current attacking and defensive width is quite narrow. A narrow defensive width in partnership of higher defensive line and higher line of engagement looks to make a tight unit which restrict spaces for the opposition to counter in. The only space they might find to launch counter attacking balls are above the defensive line, this is why I’ve instructed the team to set up an offside trap, with the hope of catching the opposite forwards offside.
In order to not ruing the shape totally when loosing the ball the pressing intensity is set to slightly more urgent, which is the default selection for the positive mentality. Again, it’s no specific style in terms of pressing neither.
What you will see:
- Great passing from the back into the final third.
- Natural Protection from any system using two strikers due to shape.
- Focus on shots from Inside the box and ideally inside the goalposts. High Conversion Chances.
- 80% Pass completion rate from Def, Mid and Att.
- Playing through middle combined with Overlap threat makes it hard for AI to set up to negate both avenues.
- Over half of conceded goals will come from Through Balls. You can plan to negate this as a result. (GK with High Rushing out and 1v1’s. Fast CB’s.)
- Very good when playing against stronger teams.
- High % of goals come from your Through Balls.
- Counter Attacks are frequent due to high quality passers, despite ‘Counter Attacks’ not selected.
- Equal Numbers of Short and Medium passes. Again, undefinable style.
- Meets ‘Play Entertaining Football’ Club Culture
About the SCT Attack: Team Instructions
The general idea of how to play is similar to the Positive version. As you’ll see, there are some slight modifications, but the 5 creative players in the centre channel is kept. The minor difference is that the mentality is turned up to attacking, which means the passing directness will be slightly more direct at a slightly higher tempo.
Instead of going through the middle as with the Positive version I’d like to utilize a bit more wide play by instructing the players to look for overlaps.
The pressing intensity and when the press is set in is now even higher than before using much higher defensive line and much higher line of engagement. This in combination with ‘Get Stuck in’ aims to win possession as high up the pitch as possible and give the opposition less time on the ball to pick out passes or get control of it.
What you will see:
- Everything above turned up to 11.
- Different types of attack pattern due to role changes and small PI adjustments.
- ‘You might score one, we should score 2’ mentality.
- Meets ‘Play Entertaining and Attacking” Club Cultures.
- OI’s designed to stop central players having time on the ball at any cost.
- Focus on Overwhelming weaker teams.

The perfect player, or the player with the ideal attributes for the Scholes Can’t Tackle is Mikel Oyarzábal of Real Sociedad.
For the goalkeeper position, I’ll recommend a player with extremely high tendency to rush out of his line and deal with one on ones.
I’ll come back with further writings about ideal player traits and necessary player attributes in a coming article at my Patreon page, so keep a look out on this!
