About the Unbelievable 4-2-3-1 Football Manager 2023 Tactic Volante Attack
Welcome back to another Football Manager 2023 tactics review! After the success of the Unbeatable Football Manager 2023 Rising Dead Tactic which managed to make Braga go on an unbeaten run, I’m back with my third FM23 Tactic created for the Passion4FM Community.
To follow on my quest to give you some amazing goals galore tactics for Football Manager 2023 I’m proud to present this Unbelievable 4-2-3-1 Football Manager 2023 tactic that resulted in 3.41 goals per game for one of the teams I’ve tested it with.
This time, I’ve moved away from a 4-2-4 shape, but kept the two Inside Forwards and an Advanced Forward to lead the line, with a 4-2-3-1 system where I utilize the main strengths of the Segundo Volante – a player role that’s tasked to make those long penetrating runs from deep to overload the opposition area whilst keeping a solid and balanced defensive shape with two defensive midfielders protecting the back line.

The 4-2-3-1 Formation | FM23 Volante Attack Tactic
The Player Roles of “Volante Attack” Tactic
Goalkeeper
Role: Sweeper Keeper – Defend
Instructions: Tackle harder
The Sweeper Keeper regularly pushes high up the pitch in order to control the space behind the defence. Taking on a more active role in assisting the team with attacks and maintaining possession. With defend on the keeper will be more cautious.
Center Backs
Role: Ball Playing Defender – Defend
Instructions: Pass it shorter, Dribble more, Stay wider, Tackle harder
Ball Playing Defender is to stop the opposing attackers from playing and to clear the ball from danger when required. However, unlike standard central defenders, the Ball Playing Defender is encouraged to launch defence splitting through balls from deep to generate counter-attacking opportunities.
Left Back
Role: Wing-Back – Support
Instructions: Pass it shorter, Sit narrow, Close down more, Tackle harder
Right Back
Role: Wing-Back – Support
Instructions: Pass it shorter, Sit narrow, Close down more, Tackle harder
The player who plays in a wide position on the field, taking part both in attack and defence.
Defensive Midfielder – DMCR
Role: Segundo Volante – Support
Instructions: Take fewer risks, Shoot less often, Tackle harder
Defensive Midfielder – DMCL
Role: Segundo Volante – Attack
Instructions: Take more risks, Dribble more, Shoot less often, Move into channels
Segundo Volante role is different from the deep lying playmaker in that their role is primarily a defensive one
Inside Forwards – AMR/L
Role: Inside Forwards – Attack
Instructions: Shoot less often, Roam from position, Tackle harder
The inside forwards aim to cut inside and help with the Attack
Shadow Striker
Role: Attack
Instructions: No instructions
Shadow Striker pushes up and tries to get in goal scoring opportunities
Advance Forward AF – C
Role: Advanced Forward – Attack
Instructions: Dribble more
