Top 100 FM 2023 Best Young Talents Under-16

#15 WISDOM AMEY

If you’re looking for central defenders, Italy is the place to scout for centre-back beasts. For as long as I can remember, the nation have managed to produce world-class defenders. A player who has a lot of the same skills as Fabio Cannavaro, probable the greatest defender of all time, is Bologna’s Wisdom Amey.

The 187cm tall defender born in Bassano del Grappa was picked up by Vicenza at the age of 12 and got one season there before Bologna discovered his talent. Rated as one of the most talented defenders in Italy, the centre-back shares some of the same abilities as Fabio Cannavaro.

Strong, quick and versatile. Quite frankly, he’s a physical beast – with the necessary Aggression, Stamina, Natural Fitness and Tackling to regain possession and man-mark opposing players.

While he still needs to develop further, he has great reading of the game and has great ball playing abilities. He can be used as both a defensive right fullback, defensive midfielder if needed or as a centre-back.

The ball-playing defender turned 17 on August 11th, 2005 but received his Serie A debut May 12th, 2021 at the tender age of 15 9 months and 1 day when he received 1 minute of action against Genoa – something that made him the youngest -ever player to debut in the Italian Serie A.

Since then, the club have let him focus on his development and let him be the captain of the Under-19s team whilst also training and traveling with the first team from time to time. So far, he has not received any further matches in the 2022/23 Serie A edition, but we could imagine he will get his chance if injuries happen or the season enters the latter stages.

#14 NOËL ASÉKO NKILI

Do you simply love Sergio Busquets and admires the deep-lying playmaker? If so, then Noël Aséko Nkili at FC Bayern could be your next favorite wonderkid on FM 2023. The now 17-year old dfensive midfielder born in Berlin was bought by Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022 for the bargain fee of just €1million.

Noël Aséko Nkili is currently part of FC Bayern’s Under-19 squad where he either plays as a single holding midfielder protecting the area in front of the defense or as a central midfielder in a 4-3-3 system.

Either he plays as a traditional number 6 or as an 8, his style of play enables him to dictate the tempo of the game and use his passing technique to help the team build out from the back and retain possession once the team organizes itself in the chaos between defense to attack.

The young German wonderkid of Equatorial Guinean descent stands out with his low centre of gravity, his balance and first touch which enables him to hold onto the ball and create the necessary space for his teammates by attracting atention. In possession he has the creativity and vision to create those lovely through balls and bring teammates into play by creating chances from deep – just like Xavi or Luka Modric.

Even though he needs to improve his tactical intelligence, and reading of the game, Noël Aseko Nkili’s passing range and ball control is outstanding. The playmaker has so far represented the German Under-17 National team on three occassions but could easily become the next German star if he continues to progress as well.

Potential: 8/10

#13 ROONY BARDGHJI

Since the Swedish wonderkid Roony Bardghji made his senior debut for FC København a few weeks after FM22 release, the FM community has clutched Roony Bardghji to their heart. In the next gameweek he scored his first professional goa with the second coming soon after. Since November 2021, the right Inside Forward has scored 5 goals in 18 appearances in the Danish Superliga.

Now on the radar of Real Madrid, the Swedish Under-21 international who was originally born in Kuwait, Syria, but of Syrian heritage, has contiuned to shine from the right wing.

With his left-foot he’s capable of cutting inside with ease – making those diagonal movements that overloas the center. With sublime technique, jaw ropping dribbles and enough flair to draw the comparison to Messi, Roony Bardghji is a special talent at a similar level of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Unlike other wingers, he got the natural eye for the goal – either by shooting from the brink of the 18 yard area or tapping in the ball into the net from rebounds. There are many similarities with Messi in both Bardghji’s playing style and skills. Despite favouring to place the ball in the back of the net with a n outstanding screamer by taking a long shot or zig-zagging his way towards the opposite goal with the ball glued to his feet, his quickness in reading the game as well as movement makes him a difficult player to pick up.

It’s fair to say that he’s both an attacking threat on counter – or the player who can break down the most stubborn defenses with his unpredictability and creativity. He seems to find a solution to create space for himself or attract the attention which helps his teammates time and time again – something that makes him a mouth-watering player for the bigger clubs.

Potential: 9/10

#12 SIMONE PAFUNDI

One of the latest Italian wonderkids to emerge in Serie A is Udinese’s second forward Simone Pafundi. Born in Monfalcone on March 14th 2006, the left footed attacking midfielder has been a revelation in the Italian youth competitions over the last couple of seasons. This season, the 166cm tall versatile attacking midfieler or shadow striker has scored 2 goals and made 3 assists in 8 appearances.

The highlight of his professional career came in May 2022 after suffering from an injury that kept him out of football for nearly four months when he received his profesional Serie A debut for Udinese Calcio against Salernitana.

So far, he has only received additional 9 minutes in Serie A but he’s without doubt one of the most talented teenagers in Italy, perhaps along with Wisdom Amey. his talent has already been recognized by Azzuri Manager Roberto Mancini who called up Simone Pafundi for two international friendlies in November 2022.

He eventually was brought onto the pitch in the friendly against Albania – making him the youngest debutant in 100 years to represent the Italian National team.

Simone Pafundi is the archetype trequartista. Brilliant close control and technique with the ball coupled with great vision, flair and quickness makes him a huge threat as play advanes into the final third.

Whether you look to develop him into a world class False 9, use him in his best position and role as Advanced playmaker or utilize him as a traditional attacking midfielder who gets the freedom to roam around the pitch and stamp his mark on the game with threading passes to th forwards is up to you.

In Simone Pafundi, you’ll have both a creator and a goalscorer as his movement and quickness enables him to come into dangerous positions time and time again.

Simone Pafundi is another candidate for an major improvement for the next 23.3 patch. What’s certain, is that he will probably be valued a lot higher after the release of the FM23 WinterTransfer patch but his current abilities are also subjected to be upgraded.

Potential: 8.5/10

#11 MARTIM FERNANDES

Martim Fernandes is the next product from the Porto Academy with the potential to reach the highest levels of football. Over the yars, both Diago Dalot and Tomas Esteves has gone the grades and turned into great footballers. Martim Fernandes was promoted to Porto’s B-team last summer and have currently received 94 minutes over 5 games in Liga Sabseg. As part of Porto’s UEFA Youth League squad, the right back has made 4 appearances. In the 2-1 win against Club Brugge, he managed to score a goal and make the assist of the second goal.

Martim Fernandes has everything you want in an attacking wingback. Featuring the stamina and work rate to sprint up and down the flanks, the acceleration and pace to overlap or carry the ball into dangerous positions on the edge of the box, or create necessary width from where he can make dangerous crosses into the penalty box.

His movements and attacking instinct often leads him to get into dangerous positions. With the ball at his feet he’s got the technique and dribbling to take on his marker by using his agility and close control to get behind him.

The highly promising complete wingback has the potential to turn into one of the best right backs in the future on FM23. With great athletisicm and natural fitness he got the physic to cover the entire flank and perform in such a demanding role as the modern fullback position.

Potential: 8.5/10

#10 JOÃO FONSECA

When talking about the best young talents in Football Manager 2023 I need to mention one who has quickly become one of my favorite centre back wonderkids in FM23. Benfica is believed to have one of the best youth academies in world football, and within their youth sides you’ll be able to poach a number of cheap wonderkids for less than €5million.

João Fonseca is one of these promising centre-backs available for less than €5Million in FM23 that you should sign sooner rather than later, and is together with Martim Fernandes (Porto) a candidate to one day represent Portugal’s senior National team. He has already represented the Portuguese Under-17 national team on 8 occassions and seems to be an important player by playing almost 90 minutes each match.

At the moment, João Fonseca is part of Benfica’s Under-19 side. The 183cm tall centre-back has currently only 90 minutes in the UEFA Youth League but plays regularly for the Under-19s team by playing 22 games acording to Portuguese website zerozero.

In FM23, João Fonseca can easily develop into a world-class player. He already got the determination to progress quickly and can be on the verge of first-team football within one to two seasons. What I like about João Fonseca is that he consistently turn in great performances with an average rating of over 7.00. He got decent accelration and pace from the start, decent strength and natural fitness to withstand higher training intensity. He also got low injury susceptibility – something that increases the chance to develop him into his full potential.

Use him as a ball-playing defender in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system and have a solid defender with the tactical intelligence to be reliable at the back. He’s also one who is less likely to make mistakes as his concentration, positioning and composure is above average for his age.

João Fonseca is really a talented player with significant potential that you should take a look at in your next save. He’s also a future candidate to wear the captains armband due to his personality and leadership – something to keep in mind if you’re playing a long-term save.

Potential: 8.5/10

#9 Dennis Seimen

As Manuel Neuer is entering the latter stages of his professional career, questions may arise who is the one to take over his place between the sticks at the German National side. Even though we’re talking a few years into the future, one leading candidate is Stuttgart’s Dennis Seimen – a goalkeeper wonderkid who is already set to be promoted to the first team once he turns 18.

Dennis Seimen was one of the young talents I had the biggest expectations for ahead of FM23 release. The 191cm tall goalkeeper has represented the youth side of Germany since 2020 with most matches being recorded for the German Under-17 side. Then he participated together with Paul Wanner in the UEFA Under-17 Euro Championship. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to save any of the penalty shots from France U17 in the quarter finals, but he kept 2 clean sheets and was one of the profiles of the tournament.

In FM23, the former Under-17 Stuttgart captain has both significant potential and incredible goalkeeping attributes, especially if we take his age into account.

Outstanding in his aerial reach and claiming high crosses into the box, as well as having what you’d desire in any sweeper keeper: great first touch, passing, one-on-ones and rushing out ensures you can play with a high defensive line without worry, or ask your team to play out of defence. His goalkeeping distribution skills and shot stopping is also above average making him a modern goalkeeper just like Manuel Neuer who revolutionized how golalkeepers could be used as an attacking threat.

In fact, he’s profile at the age og 16 is very well-rounded. It’s easy to imagine he might probably turn into one of the best goalkeepers in Football Manager 2023 10 years on.

Potential: 8.5/10

#8 ASSAN OUÉDRAOGO

The youth Academy of Schalke 04 aka Knappenschmiede has developed some of the best talents from Germany over many years. Leroy Sané, Julian Draxler, Manuel Neuer, Thilo Kehrer, Benedikt Höwedes and Mesut Özil is just a few German stars coming through and playing youth football for Die Königsblauen from Gelsenkirchen.

Now, the biggest star within their youth sides is Forzan Assan Ouédraogo – a versatile and rather complete attacking midfielder who is capable of playing both as a central midfielder, winger or as a second forward. In fact for the Under-19s team of Schalke 04, Assan Ouédraogo has received 9 appearances in the U19-Bundesliga West scoring 4 goals and making 2 assists playing either as an inverted winger on the left, or as an AMC in their 4-2-3-1 system.

The 192cm tall German wonderkid signed a professional contract with Schalke 04 on November 9th, 2022 which stretches itself to June 2027 and is one of the players Norbert Elgert takes under his wings to develop into a superstar in the next years in mind.

What are Assan Ouédraogo’s main skills?

Assan Ouédraogo is one of the most interesting wonderkids in Football Manager 2023 not only due to his versatility but also due to his resolute personality and low injury proneness along with outstanding abilities for such a young age.

Mathias Schober, the Director of Knappenschmiede, describes the talent of Assan like this;

Assan brings an incredible amount to be successful in professional football: He’s tall, dynamic, technically adept and equipped with a high level of game intelligence. Physically, he certainly needs to improve, but that’s quite normal at his age.

In FM23, Assan Ouédraogo stands out for his Determination, Flair and Natural Fitness but looking closer to his Football Manager 2023 profile, his great long shots, vision and passing makes him into an interesting ‘box-to-box’ playmaker in the future.

Even though his tactical intelligence (anticipation, decision-making and composure) is somehow below average in FM23 (23.2 db), he got everything required to either be used as an roaming playmaker or Mezzala in a 4-3-3 or an Attacking Midfielder Attack in a 4-2-3-1. He might even be developed into a great Inside Forward due to his long shots, dribbling, vision and finishing.

His off the ball movement, work rate and stamina is another prime example of what’s required of modern midfielders these days who requires to cover alot of ground to both help out in defense as well as in the attacking phase.

His professionalism and signifcant potential are reasons enough we believe it won’t be long until h makes his professional Bundesliga debut by getting promoted to the first team of Schalke 04.

Potential: 8.5/10

#7 ARCHIE GRAY

Another young player bagged with immense potential in England is Leeds wonderkid Archie Gray. The young attacking midfielder is yet to make his official debut but became the youngest player to score a goal in the Premier League 2 when he scored a lovely screamer from 35 yards against Manchester United.

Archie is the grand-nephew to Eddie Gray who was one of the most significant icons in the legendary Leeds United team of the 1960s and 70’s when the club won the English Premier Division on two occasions, an FA Cup and finished as runners-up on five times in eight years. His father, Andy Gray has also come through the youth system of Leeds and have 30 official matches for the first team. It’s like it’s written in the stars that he will one day make his professional breakthrough at Leeds.

Despite he has Scottish heritage, Archie Gray has represented England for the Under-16 and Under-17 side – making a total of 9 appearances. As one of the biggest talents at Elland Road, expectations are high for what’s yet to come! Especially since he was called up to the first team by Marcelo Bielsa and was an unused sub in the encounter against Arsenal at the age of 15(!).

What are Archie Gray’s main skills?

Archie Gray is a typical creative midfielder who shines when he’s able to dictate the flow of the game and use his vision, passing technique and flair to make those important open play key passes and through balls. With the ball at his feet, he got the agility and balance to carry the ball forward and disrupt the opponent’s defensive organization with running with the ball, or make diagonal passes behind the defensive line.

By enabling the team to enter the final third quicker with long driving runs or key passes, he has all the potential to become the press-resistant midfielder and the heartbeat of the Whites for the years to come. Whether he will become a Leeds legend is yet to find out. For now, he’s got the cleverness and attacking flair to shine for the youth side by using his sublime first touch, dribbles and close control to create the necessary space to do something useful with the ball.

Potential: 9/10

#6 BEN DOAK

Ben Doak was one of the promising talents arriving at Anfield last summer. Over the last few years, Liverpool has invested heavily in Under-23 players with significant potential. From Celtic, Jürgen Klopp and his team managed to secure one of the most talented players in Scotland for a bargain fee of only £600K.

The Scottish wonderkids is a gem out of the ordinary. Labelled as the Scottish Rooney, the teenage got both the attitude, work rate and the mentality needed to develop into a superstar. On the pitch, the right winger dazzles the world with his astonishing dribbles, carries and quickness in both passing play and movements on and off the ball.

His superb performances in the Youth League (4 assists and 4 goals in 6 appearances), has been followed up by humiliating the defenders in the U18 Premier League for Liverpool’s Under-18 team – something that eventually led to first team debut on Boxing Day against Aston Villa by replacing Darwin Nunez in the 88th minute.

In FM23, Ben Doak can be compared to Brazilian wonderkid Ângelo (Santos). Brilliant in one-on-one situations, tends to make inverted runs from the right flank to overload the half spaces and having the brilliant technique to retain possession despite being put under pressure in tight spaces makes him into a wonderful player to watch.

Along with Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho and Curtis Jones, Liverpool’s future without Mohamed Salah seems highly promising with Ben Doak probably the biggest talent within their ranks to build a squad around over the next couple of years.

#5 LUIS GUILHERME

Like Paul Wanner, Luis Guilherme is another left-footed attacking midfielder who can play anywhere along the front line. The Brazilian wonderkid have shined for the Brazilian Under-17 national team – scoring two out of three goals against England in April 2022 playing on the right flank behind teenage sensation Endrick that we all have fallen in love with on FM23.

Luis Guilherme is probably another candidate for major upgrade on the Football Manager 2023 winter transfer update. Especially his technique, ball control, composure, game intelligence and free-kick taking is areas of the game he stands out for. In many ways, Luis Guilherme has many of the similar skills as Paul Wanner. His driving runs, carries and close control hen running at full speed. His movements and visions to create chances for his teammates by making through balls and open play key passes is astonishing to watch.

Despite needing to refine his skills in one-on-one situations, he’s a rough diamond in the making. The 175cm tall attacking midfielder capable of playing as a right inverted winger is yet to make his professional debut for Palmeiras’ first team. So far he’s only received three Copinha appearances over the last two seasons according to Transfermarkt, making two assists.

Potential: 9/10

#4 PAUL WANNER

Another teenage sensation, another sublime talent coming through the ranks of Bayern Münich. Paul Wanner was poached by Bayern Münich at the age of 14 making the move from Ravensburg in 2018. After impressing for the Under-16 squad of Bayern, he was promoted to the Under-17 squad before the 2021/22 season. After an assist and a goal in two appearances he was quickly promoted to the Under-19 squad where he made 2 assists and goals in 12 games – making appearances both on the left, right or as central attacking midfielder.

2021/2022 was really the breakthrough year for Wanner. Not only did he made regular appearances for the Germany Under-17 national team where he made 3 assists and scored 3 goals in 6 appearances in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualification before making 2 assists and scoring one goal in three appearances in the Euro Under-17 championship.

Whether it was his magnificent form, injury crisis or Julian Nagelsmann’s focus to give youth a chance is uncertain, but he was soon called up to the first team and eventually received his professional debut for Bayern Munich. On January 7th, 2022 he entered the pitch against Borussia Mönchengladbach to replace Marc Roca as the team was one goal behind and needed a goal. By debuting, Paul Wanner became the club’s youngest-ever player in the Bundesliga writing himself into the history books.

What are Paul Wanner’s main skills?

Paul Wanner is a highly versatile midfielder capable of playing almost over the entire pitch – either he’s instructed to make inverted movements from right, act more like a forward who drops deep and helps in the build-up, takes the role of an advanced playmayer in the middle of the pitch, or plays behind a more traditional striker by moving between the lines and create space for his teammates.

Paul Wanner is probably best utilized as an attacking midfielder where he can take advantage of his sublime technique, close control and vision to create chances for his teammates. The Austrian wonderkid is magnificent when he’s giving the licence to run with the ball at his feet causing chaos in the opponen’ts defensive organization as he glide around the pitch.

His acceleration, agility and flair brings those diagonal and vertical runs that penetrates lines and helps the team to reach the final third. His smart movements and creativity is some of the reasons why he scores so many goals and make so many assists. Truth be told, he’s so clever in his movements and passing game that we can only conclude he’s a young skillful genius with a promising future!

Potential: 9/10

#3 JULIEN DURANVILLE

Anderlecht’s reputation as a one of the best youth academies in Central Europe has reached new heights the last 10 years. Following in the footsteps of Jérémy Doku, Julian Duranville has started to make a name for himself. The Anderlecht graduate became the youngest-ever goalscorer in Jupiler Pro by scoring in his debut.

After only 7 appearances in the Belgian top division, the winger was quickly poached by Borussia Dortmund three days ahead of the end of the 2023 winter transfer window – making him one of the biggest candidates for a huge upgrade for the coming official FM23 winter transfer patch.

What are Julien Duranville’s main skills?

Julien Duranville is a right footed winger who is capable of playing down both flanks. Standing out for his incredible abilities in one-on-one situations by taking advantage of his huge acceleration and pace. Nicknamed the “Blitz” by Anderlecht’s CEO Peter Verbeke it paints the picture of a player with the physical attributes required to stand out in attacking positions in the modern era. By combining his quickness with top class agility and flair, the young Belgian prodigy uses dribbling and technical abilities to beat his man in 1on1 situations.

What attracted my curiosity when researching potential wonderkids for Football Manager 2023 was his lovely first touch, low centre of gravity and close control when under pressure, which makes him able to keep possession of the ball and advance with it into the attacking third. His self-confidence in said situations makes him like to beat his man repeatedly, something he might need to lay behind him if he shall succeed in the professional game as he might tend to be highly individualistic.

The Belgian wonderkid has all it takes to reach the same level as, and supersede, Jérémy Doku in the Belgium national side in the years to come.

Borussia Dortmund might have done the coup of the century by signing him for only €8.5Million. His abilities in a counter-attacking side such as Borussia Dortmund can definitely help him take the next step in his development by refining his individual skills and tactical intelligence and make him into a world class winger in a similar fashion of Jadon Sancho or Karim Adeyemi.

Potential: 9/10

#2 WARREN ZAÏRE-EMERY

Despite Paris Saint-Germain billionaire owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi has spent alot of effort to atract world-class players to Paris, one of the biggest stars of the future is indeed within their own ranks. 16 year old Warren Zaïre-Emery is born in Montreuil – a suburb of Paris and is one of the most recent PSG Academy players to breakthrough for The Parisians first team.

After going the grades from the youth sides of PSG within the last three years, he made his debut for the first team of PSG August 31, 2022 by receiving one minute of action. Since then the central midfielder has received 16 professional apparances. Quite remarkably, he scored 2 goals in his first three appearances for the club. This raised the eyebrows of pundits around the globe and attracting the interest of European top clubs.

What are Warren Zaïre-Emery’s main skills?

Warren Zaïre-Emery is able to both play as a holding playmaker in a 4-1-3-2 formation or as an advanced playmaker in the middle of the pitch in a 4-2-3-1 system. The midfielder stands out for his incredible vision, his passing technique and ability to control the match by dictating the tempo. His ability to read the game, teamwork and technical abilities in possession of the ball makes him into the one player every club playing the possession-game desires.

In some circumstances, there are many similarities with Barcelona’s deep-lying playmaker Sergio Busquets but unlike him Zaïre-Emery tends to drive forward with long-deep runs where he receives the ball in own half before carrying the ball into the opposite penalty box before shooting or setting up a teammate for a chance.

Note his dribbling, agility, balance and flair – the ideal attributes you’d like for utilizing him as a Mezzala and potentially turn him into the future Kevin de Bruyne.

If you’re curious about how Warren Zaïre-Emery turns out 10 years into the future, Youtuber Maximum FM has made a FM23 wonderkid review looking closer at how Warren Zaïre-Emery develops in Football Manager 2023.

Potential: 9.5/10

#1 ENDRICK FELIPE

No instruction is perhaps needed for introducing the next wonderkid plying through the ranks of the renown Palmeiras Youth Academy. The Brazilian starlet Endrick Felipe is a left-footed forward who can play any position up front.

Endrick went viral in 2022 for his incredible goalscoring abilities and record-breaking achievements. He became the youngest player to debut in the Brazilian Serie A at the age of 16, 2 months and 16 days. At the same time asFM23 beta release, he became the youngest-ever goalscorer for Palmeiras in October 2022 by netting his first professional goal.

Goals has always been equal to his name. Rumors has it that he has scored 165 goals in 169 matches for the youth team of Palmeiras over only five years – something that may draw comparison to a certain Pele.

Real Madrid was quick to secure the talent of Endrick – meaning he will be unavailable to sign for a number of years. He is set to join Real Madrid in July 2024

What are Endrick’s main skills?

Endrick is a highly creative and unpredictable forward. Merge the technical abilities of Lionel Messi with the finishing abilities of Cristiano Ronaldo back in the good old days and you’ll have Endrick. His physic and athleticism is outstanding already at the age of 16. He’s not afraid to work his socks off to help his teammates by fighting for the ball and create space for the others by using his immense acceleration and pace. Lethal on the counter, magnificent close control and the technical abilities to make dribbles makes him a difficult player to come up against.

Able to score from all ranges his Finishing abilities is together with Flair his main strengths. Add great awareness and decision-making and it’s no wonder why he’s labelled as one of world football’s most exciting young talents in world football.

Potential: 10/10
