About Ivan Fresneda: Football Manager 2023 Wonderkid Review

Iván Fresneda Corraliza is one of the most interesting hot prospects in the Spanish La Liga this season. With 10 games for Real Valladolid, which are struggling in the bottom half of the league with one point to avoid relegation, the 18 year old right back has been a revelation for a struggling Pucelanos.

So far, the newly promoted club has been conceding 1.4 goals per game and scoring 0.76 goals per game but Iván Fresneda might be the player who can keep the club in La Liga for a second season with a combination of great defensive skills, attacking prowess and extraordinary maturity in style of play.

The Spanish teenage sensation is actually a product of the Real Madrid youth academy where he played for four years before moving to Leganes on a free until Real Valladolid picked him up in 2020.

At Real Valladolid he went the grades from the Under-17 side to the Reserves squad in less than 2 years. In the previous season, the 2021-22 season, he made 8 appearances in the Primera Federación – Gr. I before he caught the attention of manager Jose Rojo Martín who called him up to train with the first team.

January 2022 became the highlight of Iván Fresneda career so far. In a little of three days he received his first team debut in La Liga 2 (against Burgos), as well as playing 79 minutes in a Copa Del Rey match against Real Betis three days prior.

Between June and September 2022, the then 17 year old fullback got called up to represent the Under-18 and Under-19 Spanish National team. He received two appearances in the UEFA Euro U19 qualification but has later competed against Carlos Alemán for the right back position for the Spanish Under-19 national team.

After 17 appearances for Real Valladolid, Iván Fresneda has been labelled as one of the best young talents at right back in Europe. His performances, perhaps most notable his defensive statistics along with his ball control and quickness has attracted the interest of some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

In the previous 2022/23 winter transfer window, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund was in the front seat to make a bid on the promising right back. Eventually, Iván Fresneda opted against a move until the end of the season to “keep his feet on the ground”, as his agent put it and develop in an environment where he can get consistent first team football, something he might not have get if he went to English Premier League and working under a title chasing Arsenal side.

However, for a side trying to avoid relegation, Iván Fresneda stands out for his defensive performances despite having some of the attacking skills necessary of the modern fullbacks.

His speed of play, to both recover and track back into the right position off the ball, and his attacking drive with the ball is something any possession-oriented manager desires. His acceleration and pace ensures the team can play with a high defensive line as he can track back quickly.

Out of possession, Iván Fresneda is a player who is hard to beat and come up against. His positioning and ability to close down opponents is just some of the reasons for his remarkable 2.86 tackles per game with 1.96 tackles won per 90.

His reading of the play, patience and concentration is some of the reasons for his great defensive actions. According to fbref.com, he has made 1.70 blocks, 1.16 interceptions and 3.22 clearances per 90 minutes so far this season.

In possession, Iván Fresneda has the capabilities to retain possession of the ball, either he needs to dribble with the ball out of pressure or progress the ball higher up the pitch. So far he stands out for the number of progressive passes (5.85 per 90 minutes) and 2.24 progressive carries per game giving you an idea how important he can be for an attacking side. Despite he is yet to make any assists, his 0.81 successful take-ons and 0.63 touches in opposition penalty box is a telling picture of his brilliance in moving with the ball forward and coming into the correct areas for a shot on goal, key pass, cross or an assist as the team is in possession of the ball.

His attacking attitude combined with his technique and overall close control is probably areas f his game he can improve but as things currently stands he’s the perfect player to be used behind a more goal-oriented winger or wide forward.

Ideally, he’s the perfect player to be used in a back four system, but may also be used in a 5-3-2 formation as an attacking wingback despite lacking a bit of creativity and flair to be the main chance creator on the right wing.

Iván Fresneda’s main weakness is probably his aerial skills. Despite standing at 182cm, the Spanish right back lacks the ability to head the ball – something that makes him a vulnerability in defensive set-pieces. Perhaps as he gains experience and more focused improvement on attacking set-pieces he could become a decent option to take corners but then Technique, Crossing and corners must be focused on.

In Football Manager 2023, Iván Fresneda has the potential to develop into a world class player. At the start of the game, you can acquire him for a deal between €10 and 20Million. He has a release clause of €30Million which makes you able to secure this teenage sensation right away letting you develop the promising talent into your own liking.

Iván Fresneda’s player profile mimic’s some of his IRL stand-out performances with high end attributes in tackling, anticipation, concentration and positioning. His pace, work rate and stamina are all favorable skills you’d prefer when signing a wingback on Football Manager 2023.

Since there are difficulties to find right backs who can immediately play first team football at a rather affordable transfer fee, Iván Fresneda is an highly recommended signing.
