Wow, this took forever to make. Sorry for disappearing for so long, but I should be back now and I am excited to film again! We start today with an OVERPOWERED ULTIMATE GENGERPRESS TACTIC that pretty much guarantees you the Champions League. It is surprisingly very easy to set-up and can even be used with players on any levels, but you will need a big squad to cope with it.

When should I use this tactic?

This tactic is very dependent on the interactions between the wingbacks and the wingers as most your chances will come from those two positions on the pitch. Therefore, it is vital to have good offensive wingbacks for your league. They don’t have to be world class, as I will show you later in this article that the ULTIMATE GENGERPRESS 4-3-3 TACTIC also works in non-league. As long as they have decent pace, work rates and at least some crossing, then you are pretty much set!

It is also very important to have a player comfortable on the ball in the DLP position (kinda makes sense), but they will be heavily involved in setting up play!

Finally, MAKE SURE YOUR SQUAD IS BIG ENOUGH FOR FREQUENT ROTATION. Doesn’t matter if you’re a big team or a non-league team, this tactic requires fresh legs, otherwise you will be opened up to frequent counters! I typically had a squad of up to 25 senior players with 6-7 youth players coming in from the academy every year for occasional games. This lets you have the freshest possible squad for those big games and also helps develop your youth set-ups.

Tactical Set-Up:

To get this out of the way, let me just show you how to set-up this completely overpowered and definitely not broken tactic.

Quick disclaimer, whilst I think player instructions are very important for a manager and can ocassionaly work in Football Manager as well, when I make tactics, I tend to leave them blank as that leaves the user the freedom to adapt their own players to the shape shown. So, mess around and have fun!

Formation

Basic 4-3-3 Shape

Team Instructions – In Possession

In Possession

In Transition Instructions

In Transition

Out of Possession Instructions

Out of Posession

As you can see, the original shape is very very simple. It started as an experiment idea where I wanted to test out gegenpress systems after we were told that “PLUG AND PLAY GENGERPRESS SYSTEMS WON’T WORK”. So therefore I tried to create the most PLUG AND PLAY GENRERPRESSY SYSTEM!

The most important part of our game is the interaction between the two wing-backs and the front 3, whilst the centre-backs and midfielders help recycling the ball with a very aggressive press. The assists and goals mostly come from the 3 attacking player interactions whilst the wing backs shuttle up and down to ensure width and provide an extra man on the overlap.

The wingbacks are almost as high as the wingers!

In possession, the ball moves up the pitch at a very high pace to ensure that the opposition aren’t given the time to reshape their defence. This is compounded with the “in transition” instructions to counter-press and counter.

Now, out of possession, everything is maxed. We have a much higher line of engagement and defensive line (and we even have an offside trap, because why not). Tighter marking, pressing much more often and getting stuck in make us an absolute menace to play against! The opposition will be afraid to get the ball back from us, because we will hound them until we win the ball back! They’d rather defend for 90 minutes than allow themselves to be pressed by two-channel favorites Bobby Firminho and Roman Zobnin!

Liverpool Analysis:

Easy Quadruple

It’s pretty much safe to say that this tactic worked really well with this pretty much unchanged Liverpool side. We comfortably won the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. Pretty standard stuff, but not necessarily proof that this tactic is OP.

However, the most interesting aspect of this tactic is the data gathered from a season’s worth of data analysis. As you can see below, due to the very high press, the team’s defence had almost no blocks or clearances compared to other teams, whilst the interceptions per game stat was much higher. Since we pressed so high and won the ball so far up the pitch, the opposition could not even approach close enough to attempt long shots! If they can’t shoot, they can’t score, right?

It’s fascinating that the left hand side of the octagon almost doesn’t exist!

I also wanted to briefly mention the possession gained zone map. Maybe one day I can push the possession gained even higher up the pitch but as of now, it is much higher than average and that’s quite decent. It makes sense because in many games, I noticed that the opposition preferred to launch the ball forward instead of trying to play it out the back when we pressed them so that would skew the results towards our goal. Which makes sense, not many teams can consistently play out of a high press so it is obviously beneficial to clear the ball and re-group rather than get countered.

Possession gained mostly around the halfway line

On the offensive side however, everything is absolutely amazing! We outperformed all of our XGs and were the best team in the league for the best offence to defence ratio!

The front three had an amazing season in terms of goals and assists! Salah had 50 goal contributions in 51 appearances and Jota did quite good for a guy that was frequently brought off the bench! Only Mane slightly disappointed me this season as he was outscored by VAN DIJK! But apart from that, you can see that the assists for the team come mostly form the wings (either the attackers or the full backs) which correlates to how Liverpool play in Real life.

Importance of Inverted Wingers and WingBacks

Further Testing

I guess this tactic works for other teams as well! It does indeed guarantee you the Champions League! Both clubs had amazing seasons, comfortably winning the Champions League trophy! Whilst it was easier for Juventus as they had a slighly bigger squad with faster players, Atletico wasn’t that far behind as they only missed out on the league trophy by 6 points.

Barnet (a non league team), managed to get back to back promotions and have pretty much dominated the league in League One. They set the record for most number of wins (35) and most number of points (110) in League Two! This just shows that this tactic works in the lower leagues as well as the Champions League!
