Background Story
Following years of investigation, UEFA made an official statement February 14th deciding to ban Manchester City from all UEFA competitions for the next two seasons. They were also fined €30Mill for serious breaches of the Financial Fair Play regulations and the UEFA Club Licensing.
Manchester City are still allowed to compete in this year’s Champions League but would be banned from participation in 2020/21 and 2021/22.
The investigation was launched by UEFA in March 2019, after the German newspaper Der Spiegel published leaked documents alleging City had inflated the value of a multimillion-pound sponsorship deal, which mislead the European football’s governing body.
Manchester City was found guilty two days ago of having overstated their sponsorship revenue and break-even information in accounts submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016. While Manchester City has decided to appeal the case to CAS, the club face an uncertain destiny as they could be deducted points in the Premier League, lose their 2012 Premier League Title.

What sounded highly unlikely at the time of creation, doesn’t seem as far fetched after recent news.
While this database was created months before the official statement from UEFA and the Manchester City’s UEFA ban, it seems this database is closer to the reality than what we all thought upon its arrival.
About the Financial Fair Play Regulations
Financial fair play aka FFP was first introduced in the Premier League before the 2011/2012 season. It was established by UEFA in an
attempt to prevent professional football clubs from spending more than they earn and get into financial problems as a result, which would further threaten the existence of the club and their long-term survival.
The regulations provide for sanctions to be taken against clubs who exceed spending, over several seasons, within a set budgetary framework.
The regulation came into place after 50% of the clubs are losing money and is an increasing trend. Coupled that with more and more clubs signing players at higher transfer fees at even higher wages and the downwards spiral is getting out of control. The clubs have already spent more than they have earned and haven’t paid their debts. [Source].
The rule of financial fair play is aimed at ensuring the healthy, lasting viability of the clubs according to the Uefa executive committee.
The penalties for breaching with the FFP regulations are from the most severe to the least penalty;
- disqualification from the European competitions
- fines
- withholding of prize money
- player transfer bans
In the case with Manchester City it’s the manipulation of sponsorship income… a rather grey area of FFP.
Uefa rules explains the case about sponsorship as: “If a club’s owner injects money into the club through a sponsorship deal with a company to which he is related (if the sponsor accounts for more than 30 percent of the club’s revenues), then UEFA’s competent bodies will investigate and, if necessary, adapt the calculations of the break-even result for the sponsorship revenues to the level which is appropriate (‘fair value’) according to market prices.”
Therefore, there is no definition of what exactly would breach the rules, meaning UEFA handle each breach on a case-by-case basis.
